Search Rutherford County Court Dockets

A Rutherford County court docket is the working index of a case, its filings, and its hearing settings. To search the Rutherford County court docket, first identify whether the matter belongs to a county trial court, Chancery Court, Juvenile Court, a city court, or an appellate court. Tennessee court docket access is split among those custodians rather than held in one complete statewide trial-court database. A careful Rutherford County docket search uses the public index as a starting point, checks the right calendar, and then confirms key entries or requests documents from the clerk who holds the original record.

Rutherford County Portal Docket Fields

The search form has firm limits. Party Name accepts a case reference too, up to 100 characters. Case Number allows 50. Case Year is optional and means the original filing year. Court Type covers Circuit Court, General Sessions, and Clerk and Master. Case Type splits two ways. It separates criminal and civil. Every court and case-type box starts selected.

Before Find Now works, the official Rutherford case-search form runs a Cloudflare Turnstile check. That gate is just how live Rutherford County court docket access works. It charges nothing and signals no restriction on any record.

Inside a Rutherford County Court Docket

A Rutherford County court docket entry can list many fields. These include the court office, case number, caption, party role, attorney or pro se notation, hearing type, date, time, courtroom, judge, case type, and notes. Criminal calendars may add an officer or affiant, counts, the charge, and classification shorthand. Civil settings often name other parties, counsel, and hearing notes.

Read these fields as clues. A calendar setting is not a judgment. A listed lawyer may have changed. A hearing that vanished from the list was not necessarily dismissed. The clerk's chronological register and the entered orders control what actually happened.

The published criminal PDFs carry labels. Examples include Motion Hearing, Capias hearing, Preliminary Hearing, Probation Violation, Off:, and Aff:. Circuit Civil calendars show Other Parties, Attorney(s) For, and Hearing Notes. Copy the wording exactly as printed. A hearing label never establishes guilt, liability, payment, or closure. The docket records an event. The signed order records the court's decision.

Case NumberA local identifier such as 75GS1-2025-CR-502790; copy every part.
CaptionThe displayed case style, which may omit parties in the file.
SettingDate, time, judge, room, and hearing label when published.
Docket NoteA short operational entry that needs context from the register.
DispositionThe official result, never inferred from a missing future date.

Rutherford County Docket Number Codes

General Sessions numbers look like 75GS1-2025-CR-502790 for a criminal case and 75GS1-2025-CV-376432 for a civil one. CR and CV mark the case type. A Circuit Civil calendar may use 21CV-78641, and appellate matters take another form entirely, such as M2024-00983-CCA-R3-CD.

The county publishes no complete code glossary. So do not try to reverse-engineer a Rutherford County court docket number. Keep every prefix, year, and sequence intact. In the portal's Case Number box, type the final numeric segment; put an older local identifier in Party Name/Case Reference.

CR
The visible criminal case-type segment.
CV
The visible civil case-type segment.
Cont'd
A continued setting; confirm the replacement date.
Pro Se
A party shown without listed counsel, not a result.

Rutherford County Chancery Docket Timing

The Rutherford County Chancery docket hub sorts settings into daily, motion, protection, pendente lite, and child-support lists. Daily lists update each Friday for the coming week. So do pendente lite lists. Motion, protection, and child-support lists generally post two days before court.

Every PDF is informational. Sealed cases never appear, and the original docket can shift after posting. Note the date and time you viewed a list, then recheck before traveling. If a setting confuses you, call docketing at 615-217-0063. The Clerk and Master keeps the original Chancery record.

This split matters for domestic, probate, support, or protection matters. A county portal search alone can miss the current calendar view. A PDF alone omits filings and later changes. Find the setting on the category page first. Then ask the Clerk and Master for the register or a named document. A sealed matter requires lawful access, not a broader keyword search.

Key point: A Friday weekly list and a two-day motion list use different update clocks. Neither freezes the live schedule.

How to Find Court Dates and Settings

Start with the county Circuit calendar, which offers a Today control and weekday filters. Daily Trial Information says to check the jury line or online calendar after 4:30 p.m. Do this for the next day. Chancery dates sit on separate category pages. City court dates come from each city clerk.

Match each date to its case number, judge, hearing type, and room. Confirm any time-sensitive Rutherford County court docket setting with the office that holds the case. A reset can show up as "Cont'd," a removal, or a replacement date. For a fuller comparison of channels, see the Rutherford County court dates resource. A published setting can shift after posting. Call the clerk the same day before you travel.

Rutherford County Docket Search Limits

The Rutherford County court docket portal caps results at 2,500 rows. Only the first ten words of each party or reference field count. Text gets normalized. Quoted words demand an exact phrase order, and longer terms get some typo tolerance. A short name may not match a near misspelling.

A common surname can fill the list yet leave it incomplete. Split your docket search by court office, case type, and filing year. Keep "Match all search terms" on for a full name. Relax it only when a match refuses to appear. The result-table Filter searches visible columns literally. It does not share the main engine's typo rules.

No match does not prove no case. Try another party, a case reference, fewer filters, Chancery PDFs, and the issuing city before asking the clerk.

Public Access to Court Dockets

Tennessee pairs a broad public-record statute with court-specific rules. The right is wide, but not every filing is open. Direct each request to the office that keeps the record. Inspection can be free. Copies, labor, certification, postage, or a special format may carry a cost.

Key Rules:

Tenn. Code Ann. § 10-7-503 sets the general custodian-based process.

Tenn. Code Ann. § 10-7-504 and subject laws provide exceptions.

Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 defines public court records and confidential categories.

Some details stay closed by law. Juvenile material, sealed cases, protective-order content, identifying numbers, medical information, and other protected data may be withheld or redacted. An empty docket search can reflect those limits. It can also point to a wrong court or a delayed index.

Rutherford County Docket Copy Options

Know your four copy options. The free index just locates a matter. A plain copy reproduces a chosen document, while certification adds the clerk's seal. Exemplification is the most formal authentication. Rutherford Circuit and Chancery list plain copies at $0.50 per page and certification at $5 plus page charges; Chancery prices exemplification at $10 plus page charges.

Fees change. Ask for a written estimate. Name the case, date range, and document. Copy requests should be written, though Chancery accepts oral or written inspection requests. When records cannot be produced promptly, the policy allows a seven-business-day response notice.

Name the court and full case number first. Add the caption, document type, approximate filing date, and desired format. Keep a request to inspect the register separate from a request for copies of pleadings or orders. Chancery may require proof of Tennessee citizenship and advance payment, and it lets the custodian narrow, segment, forward, redact, or deny a request when the office lacks the record or an exception applies.

Court filings in Rutherford County run high. The Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts reported 9,052 criminal counts filed in the 16th District for the year ending June 30, 2025, with 8,086 dispositions. Those are counts, not people or cases. The same report showed 1,684 Circuit civil filings and 1,533 dispositions for Rutherford. Numbers like these push broad searches toward the limit. They never settle one Rutherford County court docket outcome. For case facts, use the register and orders; the AOC report is a statistics source, not a case portal.

Rutherford County Historical Court Records

The 1859 Historic Rutherford County Courthouse and the active Judicial Building serve different roles. The old courthouse is a museum now. Historical digging belongs mainly at the County Archives, 435 Rice Street. It holds older indexes, minutes, and loose files. Its holdings span historic court records from 1804 through 1914. Chancery material runs through 2004, and Circuit material through 1995.

A modern Rutherford County court docket search will not surface an early file. Start with the Rutherford County Archives. Note the record series and date range. Then request the volume, box, or loose file you need. The museum gives civic context, but the Archives is the record destination.

The 2020 Census counts four incorporated places in Rutherford County. There is no fifth.
